FAQ: Modifying A Template

How do I make changes to a template?

The templates are meant to be modified using a text editor, and not with an HTML editor such as DreamWeaver or Front Page.

After you download the zip file containing the template you have selected, unzip it using a program such as WinZip which can be downloaded from most shareware sites.

Next open the index.html file using a text editor such as NotePad or UltraEdit. Make changes as necessary and save the new index.html file back to your hard drive.

It is now ready to be uploaded to your server using an FTP program in most cases.

Can I use FrontPage, Deamweaver or other WYSIWYG editor to work on my template?

No.

The majority of these templates require that you modify the actual HTML code that generates the page in a browser.

The process of writing and modifying HTML code is very easy to learn and gives the webmaster far more control over the look of a page than does the use of a WYSIWYG editor.

What's the best editor to use to modify a template?

For Windows, I use UltraEdit-32. It is the most powerful yet easy to use of the 30 editors I have tested for the Gazette.

You can read a review of UltraEdit at Ultra-Edit Review and there is a free trial period to help you decide about buying it.

If I use one of your templates, would I be able to change the contents using ws-ftp or microsoft frontpage?

You can not modify most of the templates using FrontPage. These templates are written to be edited using a text editor such as NotePad or UltraEdit.

I've found a template that I like, but it's shown as a one-page template. How can I create and entire web using this template with additional pages and retain the typical "shared border" information?

Open the index.html file using Notepad or any other text editor. Change the data on the page to reflect the content for the new page and save the file in the same directory as the index.html file but rename it to somethingelse.html (any name you want).

Next, create a link on the index.html file that links to the newly created .html file.

Open the index.html file with your browser and click on the new link to the new page. That should take you to your new page. You can create as many new pages as you want.

I love your templates but am wondering if I am able to change the text on the buttons. I want to use one for a personal web site and therefore do not have products or prices or things of that nature. Is there a way to change it without having to graphic

We try to provide blank buttons for all of our templates. You will need a simple graphics program to place your text on the blank buttons. It's really not that tough.

Most of the templates include blank buttons. You will need a basic graphics program such as Photoshop or a Photoshop compatible program. Place the text onto the blank button and save it in either .gif or .jpg using a name that you want for the button. Then change the img tag in the HTML page to call for the file name to display the button.

I've uploaded the template on my site but it didn't show up, How do i get it to show up?

You should be able to see it by pointing your browser at your URL followed by /index.html which would show you them home page of the template.

I am trying to put a template that I downloaded from here onto my website which is hosted at Geocities. My question is, how do I go about doing this? I have tried and tried, I thought putting a template would be simple, but when I upload it onto Geocities

Yes, you can use them with Geocities. Upload them as you would any other pages but point your browser at your Geocities URL followed by /index.html which will call up the template page.

I like several of the designs on here but am wondering if I am able to change the colors? Is this done thru the stylesheet? And does the stylesheet come with the templates?

Some of the templates have their colors controlled in the HTML code and some have graphic images that contain the colors. The the case of graphic images, you will need a graphics program such as Photoshop or any one of hundreds of image creation programs.
